29. Joshua - The Problem that Almost Crippled Me

My heels were numb when I woke up one morning in the year 2004. I thought that the numbness was due to fatigue and expected my heels to recover in a day or two. But the condition deteriorated and I began to experience pain when my heels touched the ground.
Soon, I could hardly stand for 10 minutes during worship services. I had to stop playing golf with my friends. I was worried. What could it be? What if I cannot walk anymore? Fear gripped my heart. I cried out, “Lord, I am too young to be experiencing this!”
I went to a doctor to do a blood test and it confirmed that my uric acid level was normal. I went to another doctor who took two X-rays and confirmed that it was not due to bone spur. He said that the condition was likely to be muscle inflammation but the medicine to relieve the inflammation did not ease the pain. I gave up taking the medicine and the affliction dragged on for almost a year.
I did not want to accept the discomfort as a part of my daily life. This was a giant that was squatting on my land and I wanted to evict it. In my heart I believe that Jesus had died for my sins and my sicknesses. I prayed and stood firm in faith.
There was one thing that I did without fail every week for that one year; I took Holy Communion in church. Whenever I took the bread, I declared that the body of Jesus was broken for my healing. I ate the bread believing it was health and healing to my body. And whenever I took the cup, I declared that the blood of Jesus has made me righteous. I stood in faith each time I took Holy Communion.
Meanwhile, I consulted a specialist at Tan Tock Seng a hospital. He recommended that I went for a steroid injection if there were no improvements within a month. I told God I did not want to be injected with steroids. A few days before the injection, I received the manifestation of my healing. The pain disappeared miraculously and I never took the injection.
God is never too late and He is always faithful. Jesus gave us the sacraments of faith as a means to remember Him, to declare our faith in His finished work and to experience His healing in our lives.
