1. Nicholas - Delivered from an accident by the leading of the Holy Spirit
Date: August 1, 2006.
Location: Singapore
Note: Nicholas attends Encounter Meeting and he is on Daily Rhema
It was close to midnight and we were on our way home from Encounter prayer meeting. My wife Val and my dad were with me as I drove along Sixth Avenue Road. We were tired and in a hurry to get home. It could not be fast enough for me to get through this long and dimly lit stretch of road.
We came to a halt at the traffic junction meeting Jalan Haji Alias. Lights green and I began to push the accelerator, when a voice in me called out, “Slow down. Road is dark. There may be pedestrians.” In my mind I responded; Right, better keep a reasonable speed – even as I eased my foot off the pedal. This was to be an act of obedience that avoided a fatal disaster.
A moment later, I noticed something in the distance coming towards our car. It was moving fast and on the same side of the road. I could not believe what I was facing!
The stretch of Sixth Avenue Road ahead slopes upward till it meets Holland Road. In front of me, under the cover of darkness, I could make out a cyclist hurling towards me. As it came closer, I could see he was peddling furiously even as he was aided by the downward gradient of the slope.
The cyclist was on the wrong side of the road and using it as if it was a race track. He was smack in the middle of the single lane road. We were on a collision course!
As I assessed the situation rapidly unfolding in front of me, it was with God’s grace, I was able to react with calmness. I even found time to point out to Val the cyclist ahead of us and exclaimed the lunacy of his action. As we approached, the cyclist veered towards the curb. At the speed he was going, there was no way he was going to be able to move close enough to the curb. An error of judgment would send him crashing against the curb. When he whizzed passed, he was occupying at least 1/3rd of the single lane as I moved the car out right to compensate.
We avoided a serious accident by a whisker. I shudder to think what if the cyclist, instead of moving towards the curb had instead decided to go the other way and get himself back to the opposite lane where he ought to be. I shuddered even more thinking what would happen if I had sped on and ignored God’s prompting that there may be other pedestrians on the road. A catastrophe was in the making and the Lord intervened. We thank God for His faithfulness. His mercy has kept us safe and free from harm. He has honored the verses (Psalm 91) that I claim every day:
Because we love Him, says the Lord, He will rescue us,
He will protect us for we acknowledges His name,
We will call upon Him and He will answer us,
He will be with us in trouble,
He will deliver us and honor us with long life will He satisfy usand show us His salvation. Amen
Nicholas
